Hey there all, Darkijah here, you all time favourite person, just coming by and looking at vvhat is going on at Shift, I see a nevv phone has been released.

So vvhat is this 8.1 compared to the 8 version - can someone give me a quick concentrated insight to things.

As vvent off in another direction after returning the mq6, as it goes vvith compromises. But sitting and trying to fix 2 tank phones to replace the screen, around 50 freaking screvvs, glue and all sorts of nonsense. Like.... So looked at Fairphone and Shift to see vvhat they are up to. Although novv homeless and had all near my stuff destroyed, like I do live in Denmark, and solar panels is very big crime you knovv and have to be punished harshly.

So... Novv both Tank phones are broke, and tried fixing them and hit into abundance of nonsense, and I am like, this can't be real - this is just utter satanic rubbish to the extreme. So.... Do all cameras vvork in the nevv verson of Shift, and can the screen handle a 15 cm drop vvithout breaking and hovv is the speaker, is it load and clear or the same as the 6mq, Question.

Seems they have not sorted out a charger outside the mobile, but did find a solution for that, that vvorked okay.

anyvvay, vvass just moving around and looking - like so much insanity going around everyvvhere.

I do see the jack stick is no more on the nevv mobile, kinda a step backvvard on that, FairPhone did the same nonsense sadly. But still, vvee have a micro SD and a replaceable battery in the Shift phone I see, so at least that is still good.

So vvhat is your thoughts on the Nevv Shift Phone, plus and minuses - of you vvho have used it. I do consider to maybe get one, but the jack stick removal is a bummer and a vvrong direction. I do vvonder if the 6mq ever got the other cam vvorking that there vvass no drivers for. But hopefully this nevv phone do not have that issue and every cam is vvorking as it should.

Not sure vvhy FairPhone and Shift is compromising avvay from former sane flag ship features. FairPhone seem to do vvorst, like sure you can replace the battery in the FairPhone 6, but still you need screvvs, screvv you. Seems the Shift 8.1 still uses standard and easily replaceable batteries. But both have murdered the jackstick vvith there nevv mobiles, vvhich makes no sense. I think both support Micro SD, but I think there might be the same issue of the Shift phone on not being able to take it out vvhen it is turned on. Although that might be considered a safety feature for not corrupting the data I guess, but still....

By the vvay i actually did find a very nice vvay to move files from the computer to the mobile, The Sandisk usb A and C in metal, DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT GET THE PLASTIC even if they look the same. But the Metal versions are pretty good and can run portable apps as vvell. You can pretty easy move files from the computer vvith the Sandisk USB to the mobile - you can get them up to 1TB, and I tested multiple USB keys. Just DO NOT buy the plastic versions even if they cost the same or even more some times, they are so terrible.

Oh and just so you guys knovvs it is me :)

So vvhat is this 8.1 compared to the 8 version
On the phone 8.0, the motherboard had been soldered incorrectly, meaning that 2G didn’t work. That’s why the 8.1 exists – it’s the corrected version of the 8.0.
I do see the jack stick is no more on the nevv mobile
It’s down to the waterproofing. The SHIFTphone 8 is the first modular device to be waterproof (thanks to rubber seals).
I do vvonder if the 6mq ever got the other cam vvorking that there vvass no drivers for.
I am not aware of any instance where a camera on the device has ever failed to work. However, the image quality of all the cameras has always left something to be desired.

Super Info Dwain Zwerg, wo bekomme ich einen passenden inaktiven Adapter her? Hast du eine Empfehlung?

Great info, Dwain Zwerg! Where can I get a suitable inactive adapter? Do you have any recommendations?

No. Not exactly. That said, the reception quality isn’t great either, and it’s intended for emergencies (e.g. to listen to news during power cuts). @halemmerich also managed to get FM reception using a USB-C hub, the active adapter and an uncovered USB-C cable. So that works too.

Also brauche ich zwei Adapter, den aktiven und einen passiven Adapter? Den passiven Adapter für die Kopfhörer und den aktiven Adapter zum Radio hören? Und was mache ich, wenn ich Radio über Kopfhörer hören will?

So I need two adapters, an active one and a passive one? The passive adapter for headphones and the active adapter for listening to the radio? And what do I do if I want to listen to the radio through headphones?

can the screen handle a 15 cm drop vvithout breaking
Yes

hovv is the speaker, is it load and clear or the same as the 6mq
Little bit louder, but it think some would like it louder
So vvhat is your thoughts on the Nevv Shift Phone, plus and minuses
In comparison to fp6: I'd like to have it smaller. There is usb-c version 3. Waterproof. Different hardware (soc) so longer support. Big downside: issues with telephony as providers want some weird registration, mainly in those countries which shut down 2g and 3g. (Sure, the team is working on it and also fp has this issue) Shift is quite fast with smaller compatibility issues.

Which ROM are you going to use?

VVe do not have 2G anylonger in Denmark, but nice they got that sorted out non the less. (Correcting) Actually it vvass 3G that has been closed dovvn in Denmark, not 2G.

VVell I knovv my Tank phones, Tank 3 Pro and Tank 4 Pro are vvaterproff and they both have a Jack stick at the bottom, although I guess it is the plastic door that makes it vvaterproff. Like, it should be possible to do for sure, one vvay or another. Like as far as I recall even some of the gamer phones have Jack stick and no plastic door and are vvaterproff.
I am not aware of any instance where a camera on the device has ever failed to work. However, the image quality of all the cameras has always left something to be desired.
the Shift 6mq had a driver issue so one of the back cameras did not vvork, I guess you did not knovv - it still had one back camera that vvorked but the other one did not vvork because of drivers as there vvass non vvhile they upgraded it for the nevver version of Android, sadly enough. To the disgrace of Shift company they still sold it vvith tvvo rear cameras, and probably never got it fixed. I think I found something, image included, that should be something they should have added to the phone, not just USB to Jack, but USB to Jack AND USB if that vvorks!
But it give an USB-C Adapter to Jack
At least that is somerthing, I do vvonder if there is a splitter, for both using Jack and charging it for that so you can get both things, I think there might be but cannot totally recall. But okay, you can charge your battery from an external charger and svvap the battery vvhen needed I guess. Still vvonder vvhy they vvould not have made some bigger batteries that fits all of there mobiles, like I did talk about that years ago.

The adapter from Shift is an active adapter. Meaning: You couldn't use it for UKW-Radio. But you can use UKW-Radio with an inactive adapter.
Okay, so more nonsense overall, vvhat is the difference betvveen an active and a non active - beside the UKVV radio thing. Like vvhat does an active adapter vs an inactive. *question*

Yea radio is seldom something that vvorks very great sadly. Need to go back to some of the old flag ships to get some decent radio on mobile phones.

Good.
Little bit louder, but it think some would like it louder
Yea I guess a speaker on a mobile cannot really ever become to loud.
Big downside: issues with telephony as providers want some weird registration, mainly in those countries which shut down 2g and 3g.
Actually novv I am getting kinda, vvass it both they closed dovvn in Denmark, or only 1 of them. Ahh it vvass 3G that vvass closed dovvn in Denmark! Not sure vvhat that registration vvould overly be or if needed at Lebara, but the povvers to be do so much to control us.
Which ROM are you going to use?
I vvould use the L version of ROM if I am going to get a phone, ROOTED of cause, trying to get avvay from Google as of last time. The last stravv and biggie problem that made me send the last Shift phone back vvass that it vvass so easy to crack the m6q screen, like literally around 15 cm or less of a drop on vvood floor made it crack, I think it might have been the vibrator that send a specific vibration back to the screen that broke it, I had another drop on floor carpet again vvith not the biggest fall and it vvass lovvered by the cable connection as vvell, I took the vibrator out of the mq6 but never tested if it vvass it vvass the issue as I send back to the Shift Team at that point. I calculated I vvould need a Screen for each month for this to replace it, and that vvould be pretty pricy.
That is only an issue if you change stuff which is below the battery. The fp has a lot bigger battery. Shift has an universal battery, so every model can use the same size.
But still, if the battery needs screvvs to replace it, it kinda takes avvay from vvhat default thing vvass in the good old days of sanity, as easily changing the battery vvass an option. This is a FairPhone bullshit move for sure. I vvould also kinda spevv my lips at the Shift team for removing the Jack stick but at least they did not touch the battery for easy replacement. Like that is just an insane evil thing to do by FairPhone and a huge MINUS for sure. Like I have around 50 and 85VVh in the Batteries on my Tank phones. Like just because FairPhone batteries a.... let me check, 17.26 Wh, like pretty nothing. Not sure hovv big the batteries are for Shift phones, let me check, Total Energy:14.82 Wh or there about. Not really much of a difference really. And Shift could, maybe no easily, but doable make bigger batteries to fit there phones if they vvanted. Like I gave them the details on that years ago on the perfect vveight and size pretty much.
And remember there is a charger for batteries for the Shift, although not sold by them, but it vvorks and it charges up the batteries to around 95%, vvorks vvonders.

The Battery should ABSOLUTELY be replaceable, and the removing of the Jack stick is a no no Shift Team! Do not compromise but keep the sane Flag ship options, of the good old days of sanity! I think the Red Magic 11 comes vvith a Jack stick and is still vvaterproff.

Lets get this posted before I do something bad to delete it.

And on the screen breakage of the mq6, the main screen broke underneath the Protection glass of the gorilla glass - so it really sucked. Gorilla glass vvas more then fine but behind it broke a screen. I had so much hope for the 6mq but sadly just ended up returning it as of the many issues I had vvith it sadly. But maybe it is time to try the nevv one, still thinking about it and need to find out if I have money enough as vvell.

But it is really a sad vievv on the mobile marked, like there is only one compromise after another choosing a mobile these days. Standard flag ship features are done and gone for the most part and the jailing of the user is beyond insane, ads, spyvvare and vvhat not. Novv google is going further after the open source marked, not a surprise as their slogan or Motto is, Do be Evil. https://keepandroidopen.org

Anyvvay, I hope the best of Shift phones, but I guess it is also hard for a small company to do it all but some standard foundational things of a mobile should be kept.

I recall one of the old companies actually made a near one click Root possibility, that vvould be so nice to see on Shivt phones vvithout needing to further to actions to sort it out. But things have been made further complicated, thanks to Google and diabolical insanity.

Fairphone seems to be using some ungoogled thing as vvell, vvhere you can buy the phone vvithout Google shit, and there is some systems, like vvhat vvass the names, thinking and searching, Graphene OS and LineageOS as vvell out there that I have not tried and do not have that much experience vvith. Like I am just sick and tired of all the games, and it just becomes more and more. Like just make me able to buy a rooted phone out of the box, as it should be.

So vvhat have vvee vvorking for the nevv Shift 8.1, Bootloader and all.... I guess there is probably a page somevvhere for some tutorial hovv to do it, and some links to get the image files and all. TWRP, I never got that installed on any of the Tank mobiles, even rooting them vvass a nightmare, Got magisk installed on one and used some other thing for the other as Magisk did not vvork after a vveek of vvasted time to try to get Magisk vvorking. Oh I so hate all this jailing and these IQ games of vvaste of time that they provide us vvith these days.

By the vvay, all that German makes it a lot harder to kinda read along, it is very nice if you at least translate it to English like one guy or gal did. VVell at least in the beginning Carlacat did. Just helps on things on my end.

Like the only German I really can recall from my brain is: And Steur des Bapst und Turken Mord, by Martin Luther, only because it vvass censored by so many from his vvonderful children song.

Sorry - I wrote my Posts in German because it was direct responses to Carlacat's Posts.

But you're right, I should have translated them into English too, so it's easier for you. 👍

Tank 3 Pro and Tank 4 Pro are vvaterproff
But they aren't modular.
Still vvonder vvhy they vvould not have made some bigger batteries that fits all of there mobiles, like I did talk about that years ago.
Because there aren't there. This format with more capacity is today impossible.
I do vvonder if there is a splitter, for both using Jack and charging it
It's only an adapter: https://shop.shift.eco/adapter-usb-c-aux
Like vvhat does an active adapter vs an inactive.
Active adapters digitise the signal, whilst passive adapters feed an analogue signal into the USB-C port.
And remember there is a charger for batteries for the Shift
Shift has announced a charger/power bank.
Novv google is going further after the open source marked
This is a security feature designed to prevent users from falling victim to scammers. In the Global South, it is not uncommon for non-technical users to install APKs. And in those regions, scammers trick people into installing malware or scamware. It's supposed to be possible to disable this feature in the developer options.
Fairphone seems to be using some ungoogled thing as vvell
Only with their partner Murena (developer of /e/OS). But you can get it also cheaper directly from Murena or from iodé (developer of iodéOS).
The SHIFTphone 8.1 you can get also from Murena or iodé.
Requires specific (security-focussed) hardware that is only available on Google Pixel devices and 2027-generation flagship Motorola models.
