Android alternatives possible for Shift 6mq? (Ubuntu Touch, SailfishOS, Replicant, PureOS, etc)

Hello,

one of the reasons why I got excited about the Shift 6mq was the hopes for support of custom OS besides Android.
This is important to me since Google's grasp on Android is pretty strong even with it being open source at its core.
An example for this is that many default settings still send data to Google in LineageOS, and the general direction that Android has been taking is removing users' ability to use their phone without Google services. (eg. many moves to force users to use Google's push services by making alternatives harder)

Since Shift prides itself in sustainability, being independent from Google would be a major argument for the sustainability of these phones. Turning this argument around, this phone would not be very sustainable if they can only be made to work with Google's Android.

How would you assess the options of making these alternative operating systems availible for the Shift 6mq (and other Shiftphones in the future)?

Thanks in advance!

=============

Hallo,

Hello people!

Hi Hak,
for the SHIFT6mq there will be the SHIFTOS without GAPPS. All other OS variants have to be developed by the community after the certification is completed.
For the Fairphone 2 there are 6 Google free alternatives at the moment and for the Fairphone 3 there are at least 2 more OS without Google. Just have a look at the Fairphone Forum.
I am currently using a Fairphone 2 running /e/ OS and I am eager to get my hands on the SHIFT6mq.

The question is how badly you need a new smartphone and how much time you want to spend for the configuration of your new smartphone.

Hey Aska, thank you very much for your answer !
It looks like the shiftphone 6m is technically better then fairphone so I think I will go for this one. I'm not an expert but I really want to be google free. So there is no alternative for the moment with the 6m ?
thanks

Just FYI: There is also an Fairphone 3 variante with /e/ OS. The 6m is technically mor powerful than the FP3 - and has a better camera I think - but the Mediatek processor puts a big questions mark behind long term support. Not a knock agains the 6m, just a factor to include in your decision.

thanks for the answer but i don't get this : but the Mediatek processor puts a big questions mark behind long term support
easier words ?
so no alternative to google on 6m ?

Sorry for the confusion, let me try again:
There are certainly google free alternatives for the 6m. What I was trying to say is, that Mediatek does not have a good track record regarding longterm driver support for their chipsets. Which could mean that even google alternatives can only be update for one or two years befor they could have to drop support for the processor in the 6m.

Maybe the developper community of google free alternatives can support the chipset longer - which would be fantastic - but it is not garanteed that this will be possible. Is this clearer / more helpfull?

so does that mean that people will not try making alternative os for shiftphones because it is too much work for little time use and support ?
do you know any os alternative for now for 6m ?
thanks a lot

The Shift OS L version - l for light without google services - is in beta right now. In my understanding you can apply in your account preferences: https://forum.shiftphones.com/account/preferences

Here is the thread - germany only I am afraid - for Shift OS L for the 6m: https://forum.shiftphones.com/threads/shiftos-ohne-google.1254/page-3

To add important details I left out of my last post - thanks @deWolf for reminding me :) - regarding the thread about Shift OS L Version:

The post you are looking for @Hakimouse ist #83 - https://forum.shiftphones.com/threads/shiftos-ohne-google.1254/post-15006. It is a reply to a forum member who asked, if he could use the Shift OS l beta on his 6m. The responding post from @amartinz (Shift Staff) tells him, to register his profile as a beta tester, wait for the system to change his account status and allows him to get access to the beta category. He than sholud have the option of downloading and installing the Google free Shift OS L beta on his 6m. I would recommend following these instructions yourself so that you can install Shift OS L beta on your 6m.

Please let me know if I can help you any further.

There is also Lineage for the 6m available:

LineageOS is a free, community built, aftermarket firmware distribution of Android 8.1 (Oreo), which is designed to increase performance and reliability over stock Android for your device.

LineageOS is based on the Android Open Source Project with extra contributions from many people within the Android community. It can be used without any need to have any Google application installed. Linked below is a package that has come from another Android project that restore the Google parts. LineageOS does still include various hardware-specific code, which is also slowly being open-sourced anyway.

All the source code for LineageOS is available in the LineageOS Github repo. And if you would like to contribute to LineageOS, please visit out Gerrit Code Review. You can also view the Changelog for a full list of changes & features.

Reporting Bugs
  • DO NOT Report bugs if you're running a custom kernel or you installed Xposed
  • Grab a logcat right after the problem has occurred. (Please include at least a few pages of the log, not just the last few lines, unless you know what you're doing.)
  • If it is a random reboot, grab /proc/last_kmsg or /sys/fs/pstore/console-ramoops. (Do not bother getting a logcat unless you can get it just before the reboot. A logcat after a reboot is useless)
  • If the problem disappears after running "setenforce 0" from a root shell, grab /data/misc/audit/audit.log
Remember to provide as much info as possible. The more info you provide, the more likely that the bug will be solved. Please also do not report known issues. Any bug not reported in the bug report format below may be ignored.

Updates are overestimated - usually they just make more issues.

By the way it sounds interesting with there own Light version of Shift software.

Also ich liebe Lineage.
